Electroluminescent wire (often abbreviated to EL wire) is a thin copper wire coated in a phosphor which glows when an AC voltage is applied to it. It can be used to decorate vehicles or structures, much as rope light or Christmas lights are often used. Unlike these types of strand lights, EL wire is not a series of points but produces an unbroken line of visible light. Moreover, it is extremely thin and flexible, and thus may be used, for example, in clothing or costumes.

This workshop will teach you how to solder EL Wire with low temp solders. You will learn about stripping wire, soldering with low temp solders, and creating beautiful blinking wire with a three phase connector. A favorite at Burning Man, this is not only a great way to introduce anyone to basic soldering techniques, but unleash your creative potential. There are all kinds of colorful opportunities and choices to liven up your living space, a terrific hat or a blinking bicycle.

We will be using an LCD projector and close-up camera so you won’t miss any of the action.

This is an example of the work some people are doing to get an " official " message to our ( district ) State Representatives that the "numb" ers commonly being published and worked toward as being acceptable in an effort to mitigate the catastrophic and cataclysmic effects of pumping fossil carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases ( methane etc. ) into our atmosphere are unacceptable.
I live in california now partly due to the weather being of a warmer nature generally. Granted the San Francisco bay area is not the warmest of cali weather, but its warmer than Oregon where i was before.
If the job ends up being available to me, Im not sure how long i would stay in Boston? Maybe a year? Definitely love the SF Bay area, including its warmer nature. Feel very at home here. But also could use the particular job experience if it opens up.

Anyone from the Boston area feel like sharing about its specific areas of living that could be valuable to know for someone involved in natural health promotion arts such as massage, qigong, etc..?
Nicer, clean, safe yet affordable areas ( less than $600 month for clean, spacious & beautiful one bedroom? ) to rent? Ideally with nearby organic food stores. And minus crack viles & shootings?

Any other information or suggestions for moving & making a comfortable, semi-permanant yet not lifetime move there is greatly appreciated.

Some of my roommates hold workshops (during the warmer months) to teach people how to make biodiesel and convert diesel cars to run on recycled vegetable oil.

We have a small amount of garden area in the back (which seems to produce quite well), and also use our rear deck/porches for growing...

Some of the housemates make use of a composting toilet as well. We have onsite laundry and try to hang dry clothes when we can (though we DO have a traditional washer & dryer).

In any case, we are currently looking for a likeminded roommate, who would like to live in a consensus-minded home and help work towards sustainability.

Currently there are 2 guys living downstairs (where the open bedroom is available) and 2 women & 1 guy living upstairs (I'm the upstairs guy). At this moment, we are looking to find someone to move in downstairs...however (and I haven't talked with my roommates about this yet) I may be moving out in May or June, so a 2nd roommate would also be needed.

Obviously, any potential roommates would need to meet with current housemates before any decision is made...

The house is in a really nice neighborhood; street parking (no permit needed) VERY safe, nice park about 150 feet from the front door, a MBTA bus route goes right by the house, the T is about a 20 minute walk and there are TONS of food/beverage/book/coffee/produce/bakery type shops very close by...

Please email me if you are interested - I can give you more details...

Greetings from Austin, TX. I'll keep this brief: I want one of you, or a few of you, to create a tribe for Boston night shift workers and work to promote it. It is a great community service project. I worked the night shift for 6 months in Seattle, and I have talked to a few other people here in Austin who have worked the shift and I promise you that most know of the shift as being quite miserable. Books, movies, and video games, and the like, are not sufficient for people working the shift. People are social but the night shift generally does not allow people to be social enough. Fixing this problem would help society: the shift is necessary for businesses to function well, but the workers of the shift are neglected. Here is my tribe in Austin: tribes.tribe.net/answ1 Feel free to use the layout.

Promoting: I advertised in the Austin Chronicle for 2 weeks. It was an unsuccessful ad, but I think the problem is that Austin does not have enough businesses open during the 2AM-6AM hours.
Solution for Austin: I think that what people in Austin need for developing a social life for night shift workers is successful models. Boston is a larger city that probably has many businesses open for night shift workers. A tribe that caters to the night shift will help workers and businesses. Businesses can promote events such as the broadcasting of a rugby match @ 4AM @ such-and-such deli.

Thanks for your time,
Matt

Less than 20 friends getting together to ride and remember someone that had succumbed to cancer. More than 20 years later and donations totaling over $100 million dollars, it has turned into an event. An event that celebrates those that have survived and for those that will.

We ride in remembrance. We ride for those not yet cured. Those that cannot say, "I am cancer free for one year, two years, three years". We ride for those not old enough to experience a Red Sox World Championship, or a Patriots Super Bowl victory. We ride for those that cannot understand why this has happened to them and for those that never had a chance to fight back. We ride for those who wait for a cure.

Nita Little
Restless Peace
The urge to move, to go where we have never been, is the soul of our practice in this workshop.
Developing a "home base", a place of personal and creative safety is as important as the journey; how wonderful to be free when you have a home! We learn, how like nomads, we may carry our home with us, even as we track paths in and out of unfamiliar territory.
We focus on developing the mental, emotional, and physical skills that enable dancers to travel creatively. Utilizing a full dance vocabulary, we integrate gestured movement improvisation with contact improvisation and build the skills to consciously weave these two forms.

We investigate “states” of mind / “states” of body as a means to develop and direct creative work in our improvisations. Developing the ability to describe and craft subtle levels of action and experience, we boost our physical potential while increasing our readability. Moving in solo, duet and group forms, we gain compositional tools for structural orientation; like torches, they light the way.

This workshop is developed for experienced movers who wish to pass beyond the threshold of old patterns. The restless human drive that takes us out of comfort, urges us to meet the unfamiliar, to move into, through and with the unknown, is a dance artist’s call. Here, we harness that drive and discover how, moving at the speed of our restless calling, we can find peace.

This class culminates in a creative work for performance at the workshop and at Zipfest08.

Things we will do:
Go deep into the physical philosophy behind contact improvisation.
Learn underlying CI principles that manifest as pathways of action.
Build the tools for safe physical and creative relationships
Discover different spatial orientations: vertical/hierarchical and horizontal/diffuse.
Learn about our temporal orientation and develop tools that modulate time.
Develop the skills to be able to move freely between states of mind.
Deepen our agreements to open to life, to the dance.
Honor peace.

about Nita Little
www.nitalittle.com
Nita Little has been developing, choreographing, performing and teaching improvisational dance for the past thirty-six years, notably Contact Improvisation, which she helped evolve from its inception with Steve Paxton, Nancy Stark Smith and others.
She collaborated in numerous performing companies introducing Contact Improvisation throughout the United States. She is a master teacher with former students all over the world, who are themselves now master dancers and teachers: Gretchen Spiro, Andrew Harwood, Frey Faust, Scott Wells, Julie Oak, Peter Bingham to name just a few. Through CI she discovered her abiding interest in the evolution of consciousness and the mind body relationship. Since 1981 she has been developing an evolving curriculum called The Mind in Motion, which explores the range of experiential states along the mind-body continuum and reveals principles that define Contact Improvisation as well as other movement forms. This work is informed by her investigation of the mind through work such as hypnotherapy and NeuroLinguistic Programming.

As a performing artist her current work is a mix of both formal and improvisational choreography and scores. While anchored in process, it frequently explores character, story, and concept.

Nita received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in choreography and was on the California Arts Council Touring Program.
The latter award was to her solo dance company, NITA LITTLE DANCE THEATRE, which she began in 1984, continued through 1990, and reinstated as a pickup company in 2000. In 2002 Nita created Playing God, an hour-long dance opera that received funding through the Dance USA /National Endowment for the Arts.

Over the years Nita has been both faculty and guest artist at numerous colleges and universities including New York University, California Institute for the Arts, Texas Christian University, Temple University, Tufts University, Scripps College and UC Santa Barbara.

Nita teaches and performs yearly at national and international dance festivals including ImPulsTanz, Vienna, The Side Step Festival, Helsinki, Kontakt Budapest International Improvisation Festival, the International Contact Festival Freiburg, Germany, the Seattle Festival of Alternative Dance and Improvisation and the West Coast Contact Improvisation Festival, Berkeley California.
She also teaches locally and nationally throughout the year. She lives with her son in Santa Cruz Mountains in California.

As she has pioneered a path in the understanding of the mind/body/spirit relationship, Nita's mission, conscious evolution, has been the backbone of her passion and her practice. Her goal is to see, feel and reveal grace in all its forms and as it exists in the actions of the mind and the body.

When - To be determined. Micah and I are discussing his calender and if necessary we will decide when is most convenient for him. That said we would like as much input as we can get from those who are interested as to best times for most people. Right now it comes down to one Thursday evening per month or a Saturday or Sunday afternoon per month. At the moment the Black Spot is not open on Sundays but if there is enough interest Micah will open for events.

Needed - Anyone who has an interest in Sea Chanteys or maritime lore to come sing, tell stories, play an instrument - generally act like your sitting around the forecastle between watches.

I have high hopes for this as an old timer who would love to see the maritime tradition of the Cape be better preserved. Any one on who has ideas, suggestions, or comments please post here. I will also be posting information on the related Tribe groups and Myspace forums I know as well as making individual contacts.

So, I've found myself involved in some fringe theater with a company called 11:11 Theatre. We've got a fantastic play running at the end of the month, and I've volunteered to do a little marketing for the group. I haven't been in Boston very long and prior to that I didn't do a lot of theatergoing. So I'm asking the good people of Boston (that's you!):

How do you usually find plays to attend? Is it...

-- Random Posters on the street
-- Word of mouth
-- Flyers
-- Organic Web search
-- Online theater/event listings (like Boston.com)
-- Newspapers and traditional print ads

...Or something else entirely... It's funny, we all know how people find movies. But how do they find plays?
Logomotion Writing Workshop
Sometimes our words don't have access to what we know in our bones.
In this workshop we will be improvising moving and speaking, and we will be writing.
While our writing will stimulate our imagination and support our improvisations, our improvisations will enrich our writing with a kinesthetic timing to phrasing and windows on sudden thoughts and memories.
Our activities will include studio sessions of improvisational moving and speaking, spontaneous writing, walks in town, with partners, for conversations about matters large and small, and private times to write and to craft our writings and to read them to each other.
We will borrow from the writing practice of Natalie Goldberg as found in her books “Writing Down the Bones” and “Wild Mind”, discovering the associations that gather spontaneously around a chosen point of departure.
As our movement work will include many activities in partners and in groups, some of our writing will include more than one voice, focusing on the relationships between the thoughts of different people.
A goal will be to write with wild mind and intention, and with awareness of world.

Jennifer Dunning writes in her 1991 New York Times review: “Simone Forti presented her first dance program in 1960 and has since then had a steadily increasing influence on post-modernist choreographers interested in exploring ‘natural’ or non-formalist movement and dance”.
Our group, Emperor Norton’s Stationary Marching Band, has begun it’s slow but insistent assault on the area, but we need more soldiers in our army of awesomeness. www.myspace.com/ensmb

Our repertoire currently consists of original compositions inspired by Klezmer, Second line brass bands, pirates, circus music and Charles Mingus, along with traditionals ranging from gypsy folk songs to ragtime to 19th century marches, and we throw in the occasional zany arrangement of a fun rock or pop song just to spruce things up.

In short, we call ourselves a modern circus band, and for good reason! For we accompany/are accompanied by a rotating cast of circus performers including dancers, aerialists, sideshow performers, and whatever other freaky people we can round up. In addition to having our very own troupe, the Madcap Rumpus Society ( www.myspace.com/madcaprumpus ), we have also been invited to perform with other autonomous local burlesque groups and performance artists.

You should join us! If you are a competent musician with enthusiasm for this project. You shouldn’t be afraid of dressing in a costume of sorts (which you get some input on), or playing for random events or in strange locations. (though we do play regular club gigs as well). Familiarity with any of the above styles is great, but not required. Also, improvisation skills are a plus, both for soloing and adlibbing parts. Basically, if you’ve got the horn, and you’ve got some talent and you have the right personality and attitude, we’d like to add you to our menagerie.
Prescott, arizona. lovely small town in the woods in northern arizona, home of the top 5th liberal arts school in the country, surrounded by nature and strange people, and they have all four seasons. The list goes on- Atlanta, Georgia, Houston or Austin, Texas, and if you like the cold but dont have much cash- then go to Minneapolis. Great people, lots of stuff to do. I am curious as to why people who make just enough to scrape by live here.

About Bassnectar:
http://www.bassnectar.net/
A freeform project that merges music, art, new media, social involvement, and community values; dedicated to a constantly-evolving ethos of collaborative creation, self-reinvention, and boundary-pushing experimentation. While existing as a mutating collaborative effort, Bassnectar is traditionally the amorphous music project of Lorin Ashton, a San Francisco based Musician / Producer / DJ, highlighted by massive basslines, thick mob scene beats, freakshow energy, emotive melodics, traditional acoustic instrumentation, and fearless mashing of genres, styles, sounds, moods, and approaches.

About Psylab:
http://www.psylabunderground.com/
Holding down the sounds of the Boston underground since 2004, Psylab has been touring the Northeast, performing at clubs, lofts, raves, festivals, and regional Burning Man events for thousands of fans, friends and freaks. Reaching as far west as the Sierra Nevadas (Northern CA's Symbiosis Gathering '06), and as far south as South Beach, FL (WMC's Miambient), Psylab's music has set the soundtrack for many magical events. Drawing from a range of influences including psytrance, minimal tech, progressive house, dnb, jungle, ambient, downtempo and dubstep, Psylab transforms and adapts to its surroundings for a unique experience each and every time -- no two sets are ever alike.

Jefr Tale-local dj jefr tale will host the event. He runs Root Society, one of Burning Man's largest theme camps. He also hosts Club Tales, a weekly house music show on Area 33/Sirius. Jeff has been a staple in New England's club scene for 28 years.

Hank Lee will be closing his retail magic store in Boston after more than 30 years in various locations around the city.

http://hankleesmagicfactory.blogspot.com/

I can still remember my first visit to his store back when I was in high school. You had to climb two flights of narrow old stairs past an old manual operated elevator that rarely if ever had an operator.

On arriving you found a cramped dusty space crammed full of every magic trick you could imagine. For someone who knew only the joke/magic shops in Boston this was a revelation. That a shop could be dedicated to magic only.

For that teenage nerd it was pure heaven.

Greater still was the discovery that one never knew who you would meet there. On my very first visit Phil Goldstein (max Maven) was there helping Hank lay out his first catalog.

At any moment local magicians might wander in and give you a bit of advice on what to buy or how to better use some trick or device.

Over the years - even as I traveled far from home - I came to appreciate that this is what a magic shop should be. Even when I found occasional employment demoing tricks at other shops far from home there was something lacking. While Hank was certainly all business there was never a rush to get out the door, no pressure to buy just because it was the new "featured" item.

As his shop moved from place to place I still could go there and spend hours deciding what perfect trick I needed this time.

Hank was also the first to join computers with the magic biz. He had a clunky bulletin board based around a TRS 80 that was next to impossible to log on to. This eventually evolved to his web based buisness.

So it is with sadness that this wonderful internet has claimed yet another victim - the neighborhood magic shop.

True Hank is opening the warehouse to retail trade but somehow it just won't be the same.

Thanks Hank for all the years of magic.

An Afternoon of Performances by Gothic Belly Dancers and open floor dancing with music by DJ Lost Boy
July 1, 2:30pm-5:30pm
Regent Underground Theatre, 7 Medford Street, Arlington, MA
$12

Come join New England's avant garde gothic belly dance artists for a Gothic Hafli (belly dancer/Arabic term for dance party), a genuinely underground event at the Regent Underground Theatre on July 1, 2:30pm-5:30pm. Featured performers include among others Aepril Schaile, Tempest, Zingari East, La Flamme Tribale, and Badriya, performing to music from Nick Cave to Lacuna Coil to Juno Reactor and everything in between. Between performances, bust out your own gothic belly dance moves to music spun by Boston goth scene favorite DJ Lost Boy. Vendors of gothic and belly dance accoutrements will be present to help you complete your gothic belly dance look, including glitter from Eye Kandy, costuming/accessories by Karina Khan, Tempest and Desideria, and Henna body art (mehndi) by Maria O'Connor of Ancient Fire Henna. Shimmy in the Shadows is an all ages event, but please keep in mind that Gothic art does go in dark directions and may not be suitable for young children.

Gothic Belly Dance merges the styling of the Gothic or “Goth” subculture of the last few decades with the beautiful expression and movement of Middle Eastern Dance. Many of the major founders in the Gothic music scene and its subgenres have long fused Western music with the sounds of India and the Middle East, and so the subsequent fusion of Gothic music and belly dance movement has been a natural progression. Gothic belly dance has become increasingly popular around the world over the last few years. Badriya, the event organizer, has been performing both traditional Arabic belly dance and less traditional Gothic belly dance in the Boston area since 2001, and put on New England's first gothic belly dance event, Raks Spooki, in October 2006.

Tight vote looms on same-sex marriage
Lobbying intense on both sides

By Frank Phillips, Boston Globe Staff | June 14, 2007

With the Constitutional Convention just hours away, a proposal to allow voters to decide the future of same-sex marriage in Massachusetts was hanging by a thread in the Legislature last night.
Article Tools

By all accounts, House Speaker Salvatore F. DiMasi, Senate President Therese Murray, and Governor Deval Patrick, all strong supporters of gay marriage, were within one or two votes of blocking the proposal from reaching the 2008 ballot.

The three have spent the last few days prodding, cajoling, and lobbying wavering lawmakers who previously supported the measure. The razor-thin margin will heighten the drama of what is expected to be an emotional and tense showdown at today's session, scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

At stake is the fate of same-sex marriage in the only state where it is legal. The voter-initiated constitutional amendment, which would define marriage as a union between one man and one woman, must win the support of at least 50 of the state's 200 lawmakers in two consecutive legislative sessions to win a place on the 2008 ballot. The measure won its first round of approval, with 62 votes, in January, at the tail end of the last legislative session. Through turnover and resignations, support dwindled to just 57 votes by this spring, even before the intense lobbying began.

A defeat for the amendment would deliver a major blow to social conservatives seeking to overturn the Supreme Judicial Court's 2003 ruling legalizing same-sex unions. A victory for the ban is unlikely today, with political leaders saying they will delay a vote until later this session if they do not believe they have the votes to defeat the amendment. The measure will die if no vote is taken by the end of the 2007-2008 legislative session.

------
Tell me if this makes sense to anyone else:
You no longer file for a marriage certificate, anyone, straight, gay, bi, catholic, protestant, islamic, jewish, whatever.
All citizens intent on filing with a life partner before the state file for Civil Union. Marriage become solely a religious notification, not required for the receiving of any state or national rights or recognition.

then can everyone be equally miserable?
