How do you find plays?

topic posted Mon, November 19, 2007 - 9:02 AM by  Evan
Hey everyone!

So, I've found myself involved in some fringe theater with a company called 11:11 Theatre. We've got a fantastic play running at the end of the month, and I've volunteered to do a little marketing for the group. I haven't been in Boston very long and prior to that I didn't do a lot of theatergoing. So I'm asking the good people of Boston (that's you!):

How do you usually find plays to attend? Is it...

-- Random Posters on the street
-- Word of mouth
-- Flyers
-- Organic Web search
-- Online theater/event listings (like Boston.com)
-- Newspapers and traditional print ads

...Or something else entirely... It's funny, we all know how people find movies. But how do they find plays?

i don't go to a whole bunch of plays, so perhaps i dont "find" enough of them.

the ones i do go to see usually come via either a friends reccomendation, or a write up in one of the local papers, esp whatever alt-weekly i happen to be reading.

you could also make a tribe listing for it.

As a local actor, I'm more tied in to the general theatre community than most folk. I usher for some companies, sometimes I see plays to support a friend, or if I didn't get a part but was intrigued enough by the audition process, I sometimes go see the play anyway, sometimes I am just intrigued by the publicity or I'm a fan of the playwright.

Oh yeah-- I also just happen to be the fan of certain companies and make a point of regularly seeing whatever they are presenting in the area.

What companies? And do they have a listing of shows & venues on-line?

Opinions are nice...but resources are even better :)

Off the top of my head: I've seen some really good work by Zeitgeist Stage, Imaginary Beasts, Actors' Shakespeare Project, Double Edge Theatre, (not technically Boston-- but they used to be based in the area and come back regularly to perform), Great Small Works (which is based partly in the Boston area and partly in New York.)

You can Google any of them...

If I take the time, I can probably think of a few other companies I like a lot. The Phoenix has a very good theatre section, I find, but I'm not much of a fan of the Weekly Dig's theatre critic who seems to be more enamored of such "shocking" theatrical concepts as cross dressing and four letter words than anything else. I like Bill Marx-- the former arts editor for WBUR-- who now blogs at www.theartsfuse.com

I have had good experiences with both American Repertory Theatre and Puppet Showplace Theatre as presenters of other companies-- ART is often hit or miss with its own productions though.

Yeah, it seems like a lot of the buzz around a particular production happens within the theater community itself, especially for a fringe group like 11:11.
